Parques Reunidos Group acquires 100% of Faunia animal park

Madrid, 7th April 2015.- Parques Reunidos Group, worldwide leading leisure park operator with 56 parks in 12 countries, has acquired Faunia in its entirety. After the agreement was formalised last Friday 27th March, the animal park located in Madrid, which had been operated by Parques Reunidos under a management contract since 2009, has become part of the Group’s portfolio of fully-owned parks.

Faunia opened its doors in 2001. It currently has over 12,000 animals of 184 species living throughout 14 hectares divided into 4 different ecosystems (jungle, African rainforest, temperate forest, and polar regions) and 16 themed areas. Being a nature theme park, its enclosures are also home to over 15,000 plants of 1,000 different species. Faunia is one of the animal parks operated by Parques Reunidos in Europe under various business models, including Madrid Zoo Aquarium, Selwo Aventura and Selwo Marina in Andalusia, Blackpool Zoo in the UK, Marineland in France and Sea Life Park in Hawaii.

Since its initial inauguration and management by Bankia Group, Faunia has made notable efforts in conservation, education and research, as established by the World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Strategy (WZACS) for modern animal parks. Every year, over 50,000 students visit the premises, 44 reproduction programs for endangered species are run and funds are destined to the protection of endangered wildlife species in their natural habitats, such as the monk seal in Mauritania, the white-fronted capuchin in Colombia and the Komodo dragon in Flores Island (Indonesia).

Jesús Fernández, Director of the Zoology Division of Parques Reunidos and patron of Parques Reunidos Foundation, commented: “Zoos around the world receive over 700 million visitors every year and we estimate that Faunia will welcome 400,000 visitors in 2015. The acquisition of this great park will strengthen the commitment of Parques Reunidos with education and conservation efforts, connecting our visitors with wild animals and their natural habitats, and creating unforgettable moments”.
